One of my favorite techniques for artistic enhancement is the use of textures. In this video slideshow, I demonstrate how I apply textures to my images to give them a more painterly feel.
The presentation begins with the basics—what a texture is and why I use textures in my image processing. It then walks through the process step by step: preparing the base image, selecting an appropriate texture, choosing a layer blend mode to enhance the image, and using layer opacity to fine-tune the strength of the effect.
Finally, three examples demonstrate how texture can be applied in increasingly dramatic ways—from a simple, subtle enhancement to an aggressive application that can transform a relatively flat image into something resembling a painting.
